It goes beyond the practical behavioral suggestions (e.g. eat more protein, keep blood sugar stable, get sugar out of your house, etc.). It’s helping me go deeper into the reasons why I turn to sugar and different ways of addressing the needs behind the cravings. – Evelyn S., USA

I wanted you to know that I am mostly sugar free for 30 days (I know we are not supposed to count:) and lost 14.5 lbs…I have been able to let go of the perfection and ease up which has allowed me to be where I am today. Once the pressure was relieved, everything seems to have fallen into place. I am no longer craving all the unhealthy items I had been consuming. The bingeing stopped first then letting go of the sugar and desserts and then realizing it was up to me to decide what I was eating on a daily basis and that only I could make those changes. – Joy R., Texas

Intellectually, you may know you’re sugar sensitive – someone who’s easily triggered by sugar. I’m guessing you already suspect that you need to minimize or abstain from sugar in order to have the health you desire. Yet why is it so hard to put this knowledge into practice? It’s not about willpower or control. It’s not proof that you’re a horrible, disgusting person – beloved, it’s not your fault!

We find the ability to say no to sugar when we soothe the emotional brain. When we’re overeating sugar, our intellectual brain isn’t in charge – the emotional brain is. When our brain is soothed, we can do what feels difficult:  saying no to the sugar to foster health and vitality.

The six practices of growing human(kind)nessTM are designed to soothe the emotional brain. It’s what healed my 20 plus years of food suffering and helped me find a loving sugar abstinence. It also completely changed my relationship with myself. This therapeutic approach helped me unhook from a brutal inner critic, perfectionism, and anxiety and rest in the belonging of my own heart.

I created growing human(kind)nessTM after being sugar free for several years. But even though I was sugar free, it was based on will power, control and rigidity. Externally, I did all the right things. Internally, I was filled with anxiety, self hatred, and tremendous fear. Food was my enemy. Fat was my enemy.

What I know is, that this is the way. What you are teaching women is what they need to know and embrace. These steps are powerful in bringing about healing and change. Your writing, how you share from your heart and the way you come from a place of authenticity, and your compassion and empathy for your participants are very empowering and I believe life-changing. As someone who has lost 80 pounds by giving up dieting and has maintained for 11 years, I feel that this is the message the world needs to hear. – Janet C., Texas

Eventually I went back to sugar. Oh, I was so discouraged! But this rock bottom moment birthed growing human(kind)ness. This time I recognized that I wanted to use an approach based in love, joy and compassion. This is what makes growinghuman(kind)ness different:  the belief that kindness, not punishment, facilitates healing, growth, and change.

In this class, you’ll explore the 6 practices of growing human(kind)nessTM on your own, at home. Listen to 6 audio CDS (or downloadable MP3s sync’d with iTunes and your iPod) and a 180 page spiral-bound workbook (or downloadable PDF). You’ll learn how to use the tools that helped me become sugar free. Every other week for 12 weeks, we’ll have a group phone call to ask questions, share what you’ve learned, and learn from the other class members. It’s an introduction to the 6 practices that you may choose to make lifelong tools.

I actually just listened to the Nurturing CD last night. Your voice almost lulled me to sleep which was nice, but honestly, I have had so many breakthroughs with this chapter, my perfection etc. This class has really changed the way I see myself and others in my life. WOW. And my health professionals have all been really impressed with the progress I am making with this program. I can’t thank you enough for everything you have done for me Karly! – Lynn D., Wisconsin

Class participants share how they’ve learned to love themselves, how they’ve found compassion, how they’ve uprooted deep, deep stumbling blocks that keep them stuck in sugar. These internal shifts then lead to external shifts with the food.

I loved working in the workbook!!!! Wow!!! It was so powerful. So many things came up due to the questions being so good. I shared a lot with you about what came up for me on the call. I really feel like I am making a shift and feeling very strongly about removing sugar from my daily life. – Lizanne M., North Carolina

The benefit of the class is gaining extra support – both from class participants and from me, the facilitator of the class. If you’ve found this work difficult to do on your own – I know I did! – a small group setting may be the extra oomph you need to break free.

Becoming Binge Free: What to expect

The class is 12 weeks long. You’ll join a group phone call every other week, which gives you two weeks to read the workbook, listen to the audio sessions, and to practice using the tools in your own life. The group phone calls give you the chance to ask questions, share with other members, and find support.

Every two weeks, you will:

  • Read and write in a chapter of the spiral bound workbook Becoming Binge Free. Try the exercises, answer questions, experience the visualizations and more.
  • Listen to the Becoming Binge Free audio session that accompanies each practice. Six practices, six audio sessions that are about 1 hr each. Audio CD’s shipped direct to you (if you choose that ordering option), and also available for MP3 download.
  • Join six Q&A dial-in phone teleclasses. Get unstuck, ask the dumb question, ask whatever you’d like to help you along the way. Listen to others just like you as they go through the same materials and questions.
  • We’ll also have an initial introductory call to ask questions, introduce ourselves, and forecast the healing process. This totals 7 calls.
  • If you’re agreeable to working with a buddy, you have the option of checking in with your buddy 1-4 times a week for 10 minutes.

This class is the most economical, structured, dynamic way to heal from a sugar addiction. There’s no travel and you can do it all from home on your own time — but for the Q&A calls. The next best alternative is to arrange 1-on-1 private coaching, which I’m happy to do. But this is a more costly alternative. (If you feel especially motivated to pursue this work on your own outside the bounds of a class structure, you can purchase the class materials here. As you find helpful, you could then return to join a later class or request my 1-on-1 coaching to aid you.)

Also, and this is important, you don’t need to stop eating sugar to participate. There’s no big build-up to a period of abstinence. You’ll get there, when you feel the time is right, and that can be anytime, or never. You’re in control about that.

Your program just covers all the bases. I’ve mentioned before that there are lots of books and programs out there explaining what to eat, explaining calories in/calories out, explaining that you need to figure out why you overeat, but have found no other program that explains “how to” figure out why you overeat. I get those answers in your program. That’s not to say that it’s now easy to figure out. It’s a huge undertaking, but one that I now feel is possible. Through vast reading through the years I’ve touched on many of these ideas, but this program gives me a blueprint on how to proceed. – Mary K., Minnesota

How it works: the 6 practices

There are 6 practices that you’ll study in this class, and which are explained in the Becoming Binge Free workbook. They are grounding, nurturing, flowing, acceptance, centering, and compassion. You’ll discover how they bring the intention of kindness down to practical, every day behaviors. They came about after experimenting with many different spirituality, psychology, and healing practices.

None of these ideas are revolutionary. And yet when applied together, with practice, consistency, and intention, they create the loving foundation to let sugar go.

Since my intention was to care for myself, I reeled in my eating. I had a huge moment. I made a bag of popcorn. Normally, I would of scarfed it down without thinking. I was folding clothes and snacking and then got busy with my daughter. Later, I was driving to class and I realized that I hadn’t eaten that whole bag of popcorn. That was huge! Here is the the dialogue I had with myself (sounds corny.. but is the truth :) “When I come from a place of loving myself, and I eat for the right reasons, I don’t need as much (food) because I already have what I need. I am caring for myself in other ways so I don’t need the food to do it for me.” – Jennifer S., Nebraska

With each practice, you’ll learn about its positive effects, how it helps you become sugar free, and common obstacles – why we don’t offer ourselves this kind of care.

I think today’s class was so deep! This class has been life changing for me. – Yvette Saba, Mexico

This is such an interesting process… Compassion is so difficult for me but it’s slowly entering my mental framework … I worked on writing my food history from the perspective of someone who loved me unconditionally… I realized that if you work on seeing yourself and everyone you come into contact with from the perspective of a caring 3rd person that softness Karly talks about actually starts to happen… Stayed positive after a slip up w/ wheat thins and was back to taking care of myself and eating healthy the next a.m. Smile! Amazing, “normally” would have led me down the path toward negativity. I love this program! – Lisa P., Indiana
